We will focus on ‘Spray Droplet Management’ for winter 2025/26.

There are many types of nozzle technology used in modern crop sprayers these days, but our focus will be on the target, the job, the conditions and the outcome. This means that operators using a standard flat fan nozzle aren’t out of date but have a higher need for conditions to be just right for full efficacy and environmental protection to be achieved.

The course will follow along these lines

Understanding droplet size

  • Droplet size classification
  • Drift or fine spray droplets - which is which?
  • Effect of climatic conditions on spray droplets
  • Effect of climatic conditions on the target

Identifying the target, and choosing the ideal droplet size

  • Pest life cycle habits, ideal daily timings
  • Weed growth stage identification and growing conditions - soil cover & crop cover
  • Disease ideal timings through disease development

Identifying the nozzle size and type

  • Matching required flow rate and droplet size
  • Achieving the balance between DRT and small targets
  • Review buffer zone requirements
  • Review nozzle technology, angled nozzles, twin-cap nozzles, air inclusion and construction; polymer vs. ceramic.
  • Matching filtration to nozzle size

The NRoSO Handbook will also feature more information on nozzle selection and few exercises to run through on the day.
