- Nitrogen and sulphur management.
- Improving nutrient use efficiency through better timing and application.
- Managing nutrition following dry periods and rainfall events.
Diagnosis and Decision Making
- Identifying macro- and micronutrient deficiencies.
- Differentiating nutritional problems from environmental stress.
- Use of soil and tissue testing.
Practical Application
- RB209 and nutrient planning.
- Organic manure contributions.
- NVZ requirements.
- Real-world case studies covering dry springs, hot summers and variable growing conditions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand how changing weather patterns, particularly drought, heat, excessive rainfall and variable soil moisture, influence nutrient availability, uptake and utilisation by crops.
- Understand the role of nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, sulphur, magnesium and key micronutrients in crop growth and yield formation.
- Identify how soil conditions and weather influence nutrient availability, root growth and nutrient uptake.
- Develop practical nutrient management strategies for winter wheat and winter oilseed rape under variable weather conditions.
- Improve nitrogen and nutrient use efficiency (NUE) during dry springs and hot summers.
- Understand how nutrient management can influence yield, grain quality, crop resilience and farm margins
- Recognise the symptoms and likely causes of important macro- and micronutrient deficiencies and distinguish nutritional problems from symptoms caused by environmental stress.
- Use RB209 and other sources of nutrient advice to support practical nutrient management decisions.
- Understand the contribution of organic manures and how their nutrient availability can be affected by soil and weather conditions.
- Develop practical strategies for adapting crop nutrition programmes to an increasingly variable and unpredictable climate.
